Mount escape – Brazilian jiu jitsu

Mount is one of the hardest positions to get out of, being the dominant position that it is. With that in mind, escaping the mount is crucial to your bjj game. Getting stuck in bottom mount position can be very demoralizing, frustrating and irritating place to be, especially if you don’t have the proper solution at the right moment and you start panicking.

First thing that we need to do here is anticipation of your opponent’s movement, even before he has you in mounted position. As soon as his top leg lands in mounted position, immediately grab it with your hand and lift it up, so your bottom leg can scoot underneath the ankle and your top leg can trap it and secure quarter guard.

In this position you must act right away, because if you stay your opponent will just secure mount again and you will be back to square one.

So, you must push the knee down and switch your hips in the opposite direction, which will place you in half guard position.

For this entire chain of movements to work as it supposed to, hip movement is crucial. There can’t be a moment of time where you are flat with your hips on the ground, otherwise the chances that you will get out of bottom mount are slim. Another important detail is when you get from mount to half guard, immediately work for your angles in half guard in order to solidify your position.

From there on, it is up to you if you will be fighting for the underhook and attack from half guard or you prefer doing a simple elbow escape back to full guard and imposing your game from there.

Bottom line is, whenever you get yourself in a bad position on the ground, whether is mount, side control or back, first thing you need to do is not to panic and look for the proper solution in your arsenal as calmly as possible.

No matter how good you are, if you strain yourself when you try to escape and not use proper technique, you will leave a lot of openings on which your opponent can capitalize and go for the submission.
